BRIDGING BORDERS: EXPLORING CROSS-BORDER COLLABORATION FOR SUSTAINABLE ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Purpose and objectives

The feasibility study project “Exploring Cross-Border Collaboration for Sustainable Entrepreneurship” aimed to explore the potential for future collaboration between Swedish and Finnish business incubators within the cultural and creative industries (CCSI). By strengthening cross-border cooperation, the project sought to enhance support for entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in these sectors.

The main objectives were to:

  • Map and analyze existing networks to improve collaboration between incubators.
  • Explore the possibility of creating a joint digital platform to reach a wider audience.
  • Identify sustainable business strategies and data-driven approaches that can strengthen the long-term development of businesses.
  • Integrate Sámi knowledge and cultural perspectives into entrepreneurial models.

Implementation and lessons learned

The project was carried out in collaboration between Uminova eXpression, Piteå Science Park/Go Business, and Design Centre Muova (Vaasa University of Applied Sciences). Through regular meetings, physical partner visits in Umeå, Vaasa, and Piteå, as well as ongoing digital collaboration, the conditions for a future cross-border initiative were analyzed.

Key learnings from the project

Strengthened Network and Cooperation

The project resulted in a strengthened relationship between Swedish and Finnish incubators that support cultural and creative startups, as well as a foundation for exploring collaboration with a Norwegian partner in an upcoming project application. By identifying common needs and synergies, we can now work more systematically towards a shared goal.

Sustainable and Data-Driven Strategies

The analysis of sustainable business models highlighted that digitalization and data-driven methods will play a crucial role in future incubator operations. In particular, knowledge about AI’s impact on various industries and how changes in customer behavior will be influenced. This provides better decision-making support and increases companies’ opportunities to grow in an international market.

Integration of Sámi Perspectives

The project identified the need to create tailored support structures for Sámi entrepreneurs and ensure that Indigenous knowledge becomes a part of creative business development.

Revised Digital Strategy

Instead of developing a standalone digital platform, an ecosystem-based strategy is proposed, where existing networks and digital resources are integrated in a more sustainable way.

Next steps

The project’s conclusions provide a solid foundation for a larger Interreg Aurora application in the upcoming call. The continued work will focus on:

  • Establishing long-term cooperation structures between Swedish, Finnish, and Norwegian incubators and business support organizations, with a focus on cultural and creative businesses.
  • Further developing sustainable and data-driven incubation models with a focus on digitalization, financing, and marketing.
  • Implementing insights on Sámi entrepreneurship in future projects.

“A big thank you to all partners and participants who contributed to shaping this project and creating the conditions for a more sustainable and inclusive entrepreneurial environment.”
